Dr Leroy Logan MBE in Conversation with Cooley LLP for Black History Month

Dr Leroy Logan MBE was honoured to join colleagues at Cooley LLP at their London offices in 22 Bishopsgate for a powerful fireside conversation marking Black History Month.

Hosted by Chanèle Couture, DEI & CSR Lead at Cooley UK, the event brought together professionals from across the firm’s UK and US offices for an open, thought-provoking discussion about leadership, accountability and culture change in both policing and the legal sector.

The session opened with a short clip from Small Axe: Red, White and Blue, the award-winning film portraying Leroy’s journey as a pioneering black police officer and his efforts to challenge institutional racism from within. This set the tone for an evening of honest reflection and practical insight.

During the conversation, Leroy drew on his decades of experience – from frontline policing to senior leadership and advocacy – to explore how organisations can move beyond surface-level diversity efforts to build truly inclusive and accountable cultures. Key themes included:

  • The importance of transparent leadership and measurable change

  • The enduring lessons of the Macpherson Inquiry and the fight against institutional racism

  • Parallels between organisational culture in policing and professional services

  • How leaders can sustain DEI commitments despite wider political and social pressures

Participants engaged actively, both in the room and virtually, in a dialogue that was candid, values-led and forward-looking.

Leroy also reflected on his ongoing work with young people and communities, emphasising the role of mentorship, representation and resilience in shaping future leaders.

Events like this underline why Black History Month is more than a commemoration of the past – it is an opportunity to advance meaningful change in the present and beyond.
