Honorary EDI Fellow – University of East London
Advancing Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in Higher Education
We’re proud to share that Dr Leroy Logan MBE has been appointed as an Honorary Fellow in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) by the University of East London — part of the inaugural cohort of Fellows recognised for their leadership in advancing inclusion, belonging and social justice across higher education and beyond.
This distinguished appointment reflects Leroy’s life-long commitment to challenging inequality, advocating for structural change, and elevating voices historically marginalised within institutions of power — whether policing, public services, or academic communities.
What This Fellowship Means
The Honorary EDI Fellows programme was launched by UEL in November 2025 to bring external expertise and lived experience deep into the heart of the university’s strategy on equity, diversity and inclusion. The Fellows support UEL in shaping policy, strengthening inclusive research and practice, and fostering environments where all staff and students can thrive.
As part of this role, Leroy will:
Advise on strategic priorities within UEL’s EDI portfolio
Contribute to community conversations and collaborative projects
Support efforts to eliminate awarding gaps and enhance inclusive leadership
Embed lived experience into teaching, research, and policy discussions
Help strengthen pathways for under-represented groups across education and employment
Leroy’s Commitment to Inclusion & Equity
Leroy’s career embodies the values central to this Fellowship. After 30 years in the Metropolitan Police, where he challenged racism from within and helped transform institutional culture, he has continued that work in public service, commentary, mentoring and advocacy. His lived experience and professional journey have made him one of the UK’s most respected voices on equitable policing, community engagement and systemic reform.
This appointment follows Leroy’s longstanding engagement with education, youth empowerment and social justice — including speaking, writing and advising across the public and voluntary sectors.
About the EDI Fellows Programme
The inaugural cohort of Honorary EDI Fellows at UEL includes leaders from across sectors whose work spans race, gender, disability, LGBTQ+ identities, socioeconomic disadvantage, and more. Together, the Fellows support the university’s ongoing efforts to embed equity and inclusion in everything it does — from research and teaching to leadership development and community impact
