The Problem with Policing in Britain: Faiza Shaheen in Conversation with Dr Leroy Logan MBE
On 29 June 2026, Dr Leroy Logan MBE joined economist, author and campaigner Faiza Shaheen for The Problem with Policing in Britain—a live community discussion exploring the challenges, responsibilities and future of policing in modern Britain. The event brought together members of the public for an open and honest conversation about policing, race, accountability and community trust.
Drawing on more than 30 years of policing experience, including his role as a founding member of the Black Police Association, Leroy reflected on the progress that has been made in policing, as well as the challenges that remain. Sharing personal experiences of leading change from within the Metropolitan Police, he spoke about the importance of ethical leadership, maintaining public confidence and ensuring policing remains accountable to the communities it serves.
The discussion explored a wide range of issues, including police legitimacy, protest policing, institutional culture and the relationship between politics and public service. Throughout the evening, Leroy emphasised that lasting reform requires more than policy change—it demands cultural transformation, transparency and meaningful engagement with the communities that policing exists to protect.
The audience Q&A encouraged thoughtful debate on the future of policing, with attendees contributing a range of perspectives on how trust can be rebuilt and confidence strengthened. The event reflected the importance of creating spaces where difficult conversations can take place respectfully and constructively, with the shared aim of improving outcomes for everyone.
